The core: answer, understand, act
A modern voice agent holds a natural conversation with sub-second responses, in more than one language, and takes actions mid-call: checking a calendar, booking a slot, capturing a lead, transferring to a human. It isn't an IVR tree, there are no menus, just conversation.
The task list keeps growing
- Lead qualification, budget, area, timeline, urgency, extracted as structured fields
- Calendar booking with confirmations by WhatsApp or email
- CRM updates, every call becomes a transcript plus clean data your CRM can ingest
- Missed-call and after-hours coverage, so nothing rings out
- Applicant screening lines that ask consistent questions and log verbatim answers
- Internal hotlines: vendor triage, staff coordination, incident logging
What it still can't do (and shouldn't pretend to)
It shouldn't negotiate deals, give medical or legal advice, or bluff through questions outside its knowledge. A well-built agent knows its edges: it answers from your approved knowledge, and hands off to a human, gracefully, one sentence in, when the call outgrows it.
Accents and code-switching remain the honest frontier. In our region, where a sentence can start in Arabic and end in English, recognition quality varies by dialect, which is why we test with native speakers before promising anything publicly.
How to evaluate one (five questions)
- Latency: does it respond in under ~1.5 seconds, or do callers talk over it?
- Languages: can it genuinely hold YOUR customers' languages, proven, not claimed?
- Handoff: how fast can a caller reach a human when they want one?
- Data: do you get transcripts, recordings, and structured fields you own?
- Guardrails: what happens when it doesn't know the answer?
